The Pornographer uses its provocative title and hardcore footage merely as the backdrop to a rather typical study of male mid-life crisis.
A scene from the film “The Pornographer.”
The Pornographer [2001] [DVD] by Jean-Pierre Leaud
“‘The Pornographer’ does to its theme precisely what pornography does to sex — it isolates specific parts while ignoring the bigger picture and the larger meaning.”
Episodic portrait of a prudish pornographer who finally opens up and talks about his life and work to a reporter after the trauma of leaving his wife and a life of ease. It doesn’t have as much to say about the nature of pornography, and the porn business then and now, as one might expect, but fell foul of the BBFC to the tune of eleven seconds of facial come-shot. Notable for a late performance by its iconic star, whose face conjures the very era with which the film obliquely concerns itself.
