I love being outdoors, and one of my favourite things to do is to go hiking (or bushwalking as we say in Australia 😉 ). On this hike I went hiking fully naked, with just a pair of sneakers and my backpack. What do you think you would do if you saw a naked hiker on the trail? Did you know that there are nudist hiking groups? I really loved this bushwalk…may you’d like to join me for the next one?
In a world first, on April 26 the traditional open-air assembly in Appenzell, a scenic region in eastern Switzerland, decided overwhelmingly to clamp down on a sudden influx of naked tourists, particularly from nearby Germany. The government of Appenzell Inner Rhodes recommended the ban, saying the local population was opposed to the “indecent practice”.At least one naked hiker was detained in the mountain region of Alpstein last summer but could not be fined as naked rambling was not outlawed.
Each essay is an individual perspective on the subject, and many topics are covered. Mostly they deal with subjective accounts, with little information on the practical aspects of naked hiking. However, the practicalities are mostly the same as for any sort of hiking in natural places, with few special considerations for a hiker’s nudity. The practicalities include things such as adequate water, insect repellant, sunscreen, good footwear, first aid kit, maps and compass (perhaps), and so on. Anyone who’s done trail hiking should already know the basics.
The accompanying text to Roshan’s images, published in a book, Nacktwander (nude hiker in German) via Sturm and Drang, is by filmmaker Ulrich Seidl, providing a thoughtful interpretation of the series. “I am not a naked hiker,” he says. “The images of naked bodies taken by the young Swiss photographer Roshan Adhihetty offer glimpses into a world previously unknown to me.” Yet the photograph’s unfamiliarity is what spurs inspiration. “They are images that go beyond the pure documentary, and, through their staged composition, also direct our gazes at human existence itself.
