A brooding, chilling and grimly effective New York lensed Italian coming of age drama set in the Big Apple sex industry of the mid seventies, 1978’s Nuda prohibida (BLUE NUDE) is a riveting and haunting work. A completely unique meeting between the Italian Mondo film community and the revolutionary New York Porn scene, BLUE NUDE is much more than just a MIDNIGHT COWBOY/TAXI DRIVER/SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER mash-up. It’s an unforgettable experience in its own way and I was quite taken with it.
BLUE NUDE features a somber and subtle lead performance from Gerardo Amato, who guides the film with work that’s nobly steps away from the hyper-macho persona roles that dominated this period. I admired and quite liked his performance…
Blue Nude wears her influences on her sleeves– Midnight Cowboy, Taxi Driver, Hardcore, Snuff. You’ll even catch their posters in scenes of the city’s interiors and exteriors so expertly caught on film. Unlike the future’s New York Ripper, NYC still has some magic next to its grittiness. There is life, and its hungry.
